Congratulations are in order. At the 57th Congress of AORN (the Association of Perioperative Nurses) held in Denver in mid-March, the team from HCA-affiliate hospital Montgomery Regional in Blacksburg, VA, won that association’s annual QuizBowl.

The QuizBowl is held each year to test participants’ knowledge of the latest in AORN’s Perioperative Standards and Recommended Practices. The Montgomery Regional team, known as “Hokie Nation” because of the hospital’s proximity to Virginia Tech, beat out three other finalists. The four teams had reached the finals by completing an online qualifying-round test several months ago.

“This competition demonstrates that HCA has the best and the brightest perioperative nurses. The dedication of the team from Montgomery Regional is extraordinary, as preparation for the competition takes hours of research and memorization. The collective knowledge of these professionals elevates the level of patient care for all surgical patients, especially those at their hospital,” said Stephanie S. Davis, RN, MS, CNOR, AVP Surgical Services, HCA Clinical Services Group.

Each member of the final four teams received free registration to the 2010 Congress. Also, each QuizBowl participant earned 1.5 Continuing Education Units (CEUs). But it was Montgomery Regional’s team of Amy Woods, Anna Browning, Dee Hawthorne, and Salie Manedoza that took home the title “2010 QuizBowl Champions.”
