The HCA Haiti Relief Fund: A Summary

HCA Haiti Relief FundHere's an update and summary of the efforts made by the family of HCA-affiliate employees and some of their partners in compassion to relieve the suffering in Haiti after the tragic earthquake there nearly three months ago.

Immediately after the earthquake, HCA established the HCA Haiti Relief Fund and promised to match contributions and in-kind donations up to a total of $1 mllion (read the original post). The cumulative total of donations of cash, goods and services ran to $1,233,462 — that's almost 25 percent more than the original commitment!

Employees' cash donations and the company's match totaled $643,346, which the Relief Fund will distribute to the American Red Cross and Doctors Without Borders. In addition, caregivers at 19 different HCA-affiliate hospitals and outpatient centers cared for 152 earthquake victims.

All About Staffing, the temporary and travel staffing affiliate of HCA, registered 321 employees who wished to volunteer their time and services in Haiti at an eventual time, and AAS also arranged for additional staffing in anticipation of an influx of patients, given the proximity of Florida to Haiti.

HCA’s East Florida Division led in-kind donation efforts, working to coordinate the company's delivery of such necessities as ready-to-eat meal packs, water, medical supplies and even a C-Arm X-ray intensifier. The Division even received donations from outside suppliers, such as linens from two companies, Florida Linen Services and Crown Healthcare Laundry Servies, totalling $15,000 in value. LSL, a Chicago-based distributor of healthcare supplies, donated water, IV start kits and laceration and suture removal trays valued at $40,000, while Orthopedic Concepts (an orthopedic vendor) donated three trays of implants valued at $24,220. (You can learn more about the East Florida Division's relief efforts and watch videos of some team members in action at the East Florida Division Video Library.)

Such outreach speaks volumes about the caring spirit of members of the HCA family, bounded neither by the start or stop of the workday nor by geography.
